About Us

Founded in 1977, BirthWays is a comprehensive pregnancy, birth, and parenting education and resource center based in Berkeley, California. For more than four decades, we have supported expecting parents and families through one of life’s most transformative journeys: bringing a child into the world and adjusting to life as a new parent.

At BirthWays, we understand that childbirth is not just a medical event, but a deeply personal and emotional experience. Every pregnancy is unique, and every birth story deserves care, respect, and informed support. Our mission is to ensure that families feel empowered with knowledge, confident in their choices, and supported throughout every stage of pregnancy, labour, birth, and postpartum recovery.

We offer a wide range of classes, support groups, and community events designed to help new and expecting parents feel prepared and connected. From understanding birth options and pain management techniques to learning newborn care and postpartum recovery, our programs are designed to guide families with compassion and clarity. We also provide opportunities for perinatal professionals to grow, collaborate, and strengthen the care network supporting families in our community.

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, BirthWays is committed to accessibility and inclusivity. We believe that every family deserves access to high-quality pregnancy and childbirth education, regardless of background or circumstance. Our approach is non-judgmental and supportive, creating a safe space where questions are welcomed and every voice is heard.

We also recognize the importance of emotional wellbeing during the perinatal journey. Pregnancy and birth can bring joy, uncertainty, fear, and excitement all at once. That is why we emphasize not only physical preparation, but also emotional support, community connection, and compassionate guidance.

At BirthWays, we are here to walk alongside you — from your first trimester through birth and into the early days of parenthood. Our goal is simple: to help families feel informed, supported, and never alone as they welcome new life into the world.
